A complete delivery does not automatically mean installation should begin. Final wall finishes may still be incomplete. Floor levels or ceiling conditions may have changed. Plumbing and electrical points may not match the approved drawings, and packages may not yet be sorted by room or cabinet code.
This custom cabinetry installation preparation checklist is intended for builders, contractors, site managers, interior designers and overseas project buyers. It explains how to review site conditions, service points, access, storage, fixing requirements and installation clearances before cabinets are released for installation.
What Installation Preparation Should Actually Confirm
The old buying standard is simple: the cabinets are on site and an installer is available, so installation can start.
A stronger buying standard is more specific: installation should begin only when the approved scope, final site conditions, services, access, package identity, fixing requirements and unresolved items have been reviewed.
The proof is not a general message such as “site ready.” The proof is a connected group of records: the approved drawing revision, latest measurement record, service-point information, room and cabinet list, delivery inspection status, access plan, fixing notes, site-protection requirements and a list of open decisions.
1. Confirm the Installation Scope and Responsibility Boundary
Start by confirming what the installation scope includes. Product delivery, unloading, indoor movement, storage, assembly, wall fixing, worktop coordination, adjustment, sealing, cleanup and site protection are separate responsibilities.
The quotation, contract or project responsibility list should identify which party handles each task. If the local installer is responsible for electrical, plumbing, stone, glass or other related work, record the coordination point and required sequence.
The cabinet contract scope should also identify exclusions and client-supplied items. A hidden-cost checklist can help the project team review whether access equipment, lifting, waste removal, protection materials or additional site work sit outside the original cabinet installation scope.
2. Verify Final Site Dimensions and Finished Conditions
Compare the approved design with the latest site measurement record before installation. Check wall lengths, finished floor level, ceiling height, wall thickness, corners, columns, beams, skirting, windows, door frames and other fixed conditions that affect the cabinet position.
Record which dimensions were taken before final finishes and which were confirmed after flooring, plaster, tiles, wall panels or ceilings were completed. Where a condition remains provisional, identify the affected cabinet and the decision required before fixing begins.
The approved drawing checklist should remain connected to the site record. Do not rely on an older screenshot or an unlabelled measurement when a later revision or site update exists.
3. Check Walls, Floors and Ceilings
Cabinet installation depends on the condition of the surfaces around it. Review whether floors are complete and stable, walls are ready for the planned fixing method, and ceilings or bulkheads match the approved design.
Note uneven walls, out-of-square corners, changes in floor level, protruding services, loose finishes, moisture exposure or surfaces that are not ready to carry the intended load. These conditions may affect fillers, scribes, toe kicks, tall cabinets, wall cabinets and decorative panels.
Do not apply one universal tolerance to every project. The acceptable condition depends on the approved drawings, cabinet type, finish, fixing method, surrounding work and contract requirements. Where site conditions exceed the planned installation allowance, record the issue before modifying cabinet parts.
4. Confirm Plumbing, Electrical and Appliance Interfaces
Check water points, waste positions, sockets, switches, lighting drivers, sensor locations, cable routes, ventilation openings and appliance services against the current drawing and equipment information.
For kitchens, bathroom vanities, laundry cabinets and illuminated wardrobes, a small change in a service position can affect drawers, shelves, back panels or access for later maintenance. Confirm whether service penetrations will be prepared before cabinet installation or completed after the cabinet position is marked.
Electrical, plumbing, gas and other regulated work should be completed or reviewed by appropriately qualified trades where required. The cabinet installer should not be expected to resolve an undefined service condition without an approved coordination decision.
5. Plan Access, Unloading, Storage and Lifting
Review the route from the delivery point to the installation area. Check door widths, corridors, lifts, stairs, turning space, floor protection, working hours and any building restrictions.
Tall cabinets, long panels, countertops, glass, mirrors and assembled units may require more space or a different handling method than flat panels and small cartons. Identify items that need lifting equipment, additional people or a separate movement plan.
Storage should keep packages dry, identifiable and protected from ongoing site work. Do not remove all labels or open every package before the room, cabinet code and installation sequence have been confirmed.
6. Sort Packages, Hardware and Components by Room
Use the cabinet delivery inspection checklist before installation materials are distributed around the site. Confirm package quantity, labels, visible condition and the relationship between packages, hardware bags and the approved room list.
Sort packages by unit, room and cabinet code. Keep loose handles, fixing parts, lighting components, rails, shelves, glass and mirrors connected to the correct cabinet reference. Where one cabinet is divided across several packages, identify the complete group before assembly begins.
A missing small part can interrupt the sequence even when the main cabinet panels are present. Record shortages, mixed labels or unclear package references before installation.
7. Confirm Fixing Conditions, Tools and Installation Information
The fixing method depends on the cabinet design, wall or floor substrate, load, local requirements and approved installation detail. Confirm whether the installer has the required drawings, assembly information, fixing notes and product-specific instructions.
Review the tools, fixings, brackets, sealants, packers, levelling materials and access equipment needed for the agreed scope. Do not assume that one standard tool list or fixing type applies to every wall, cabinet or country.
Where structural support, waterproofing, fire-rated construction or other specialist conditions apply, obtain the relevant project approval before installation. Changes to the fixing method should be recorded rather than decided informally after the cabinets are opened.
8. Review Installation Clearances and Work Sequence
Custom cabinetry installation clearance requirements should be reviewed together with door swings, drawer movement, appliance openings, handles, walkways and the sequence of surrounding work.
Confirm clearance beside walls, beds, door frames, windows, appliances, skirting, ceiling features and adjacent cabinets. Review the space needed to lift tall cabinets, connect services, fit countertops, install wall panels and adjust doors or drawers.
Plan the order of work for base cabinets, tall cabinets, wall cabinets, fillers, panels, countertops, appliances and accessories. The sequence may differ by room and site condition. After positioning and adjustment, door gaps and alignment should be reviewed against the approved design and actual installation condition.
9. Protect Finished Surfaces and Nearby Work
Installation takes place within an active project environment. Confirm how finished floors, walls, doors, windows, countertops, appliances and completed cabinet surfaces will be protected.
Define where cutting, drilling, unpacking and waste collection can take place. Keep protective materials and packaging until the relevant items have been checked and positioned. Dust, moisture, adhesive, metal swarf and impact from tools can affect both cabinetry and surrounding finishes.
Site protection does not remove the need for careful handling. Record any existing damage or incomplete surrounding work before installation so that later responsibility is not based on memory.
10. Record Open Issues and the Installation-Release Decision
Before installation begins, list unresolved conditions and identify the affected rooms or cabinets. Open issues may include final measurements, service positions, missing packages, unconfirmed fixings, incomplete flooring, wet areas, unavailable appliances or blocked access.
The project team should decide whether installation can proceed, proceed only in unaffected areas or remain on hold. Record the decision, responsible person, date and any assumptions used.
If a site condition changes after release, update the record and review the affected cabinets. A clear installation-release decision is more useful than a general instruction to “start where possible.”

What This Checklist Does Not Replace
Installation preparation does not replace structural review, waterproofing inspection, electrical or plumbing certification, local permits, safety planning or the requirements of qualified trades.
It also does not replace product and delivery checks. Packages should be inspected on arrival, and visible transport damage should be recorded before evidence is removed or repaired. Final installation quality, adjustment and acceptance should be reviewed after the cabinets are positioned and the surrounding work is complete.
